Chasing perfect

When it comes to slow fashion and a recognition of the value of natural fibers, it can be easy to focus on perfection. In an ideal scenario, I would raise multiple types of fiber animals. I would grow my own cotton and flax. I would harvest the wool, angora, mohair, and cashmere from my animals and pick my fiber plants. I would clean and process and spin all these fibers into thread and yarn. I could keep them natural or dye them using plant dyes if I chose to add some color. I would weave them into fabrics and sew them into garments, or crochet them into something useful. My entire wardrobe would be home-grown and created without ever seeing another country. There would be no toxins used in the process. No underpaid and poorly treated labor. No polluting the environment. No synthetic fibers. Perfect.

But wow, that is a lot of work! I don’t have the resources, the time, or the range of skills needed to take on all of those things for myself. I really don’t have the capacity to meet the clothing needs of my family of 10 in this way! Oftentimes I know I can struggle with seeing the perfect goal and knowing it would be almost (or totally) impossible to reach it. That hopelessness makes me want to give up and just go with the flow. Wouldn’t it be easier to just choose the way the rest of the world has chosen? It would definitely be easier, but our goal for Legacy Market is to encourage you that there are baby steps everyone can take to work toward a better way. We want to help you recognize small changes in thinking that can make a big difference, to learn new skills, and to have some fun along the way! It doesn’t have to cost a lot of money or take over all your time. We hope you will journey with us.
